Bixler Vineyards – Lodi, California
2009 Union Island Red
When David Bixler came to the California Delta after his prosperous run during the Nevada Silver Rush of the 1860’s, little did he know that a wine brand in his namesake would be born some 150 years later. The vineyards of Augusta Bixler Farms encompass approximately 300 acres on Union Island in the South San Joaquin Delta. Here, the rich fertile sandy-loam delta soils, along with a unique microclimate make this location ideal for growing premium wine grapes. Warm summer days leading to predictably cool Delta breezes each evening, are key elements contributing to ideal fruit ripeness and the creation of Bixler Vineyards wines. The 2009 Union Island Red is the 3rd vintage producing their benchmark red under the careful eye of winemaker Heather Pyle. It is comprised of 60% Merlot, 17% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah, and 10% Tempranillo all from August Bixler Farms. The wine exhibits rich, ripe, forward fruit, with flavors of ripe cherries, plums and berries. A hint of aromatic French oak is also apparent throughout. The finish is smooth and persistent. Drink now through 2014. This hearty wine is very approachable, pairing nicely with most any grilled red meat, sausages, winter stews or soups, pizza or marinara pasta dishes. Being nicely balanced and silky smooth; this wine is perfectly suited for a superb meal or simply as a cocktail by the fireplace or your next get-together with family and friends!

Fairview Wines – South Africa
2008 La Capra Merlot
The home of Fairview wines is a 300 ha farm on the south-west-facing slopes of Paarl Mountain, a granite rock outcrop in the heart of the Paarl wine district, viticulturally among the most historic and influential areas of the Cape wine lands. Winemaking on the farm can be traced back to 1699, not quite a half-century after the first European settlers arrived in southern Africa. But its wines entered the modern era with the first bottling under the Fairview label in 1974 by the Back family, owners since 1937. Today, some three decades later, grandson Charles Back II has brought Fairview wines to world markets including the whimsical La Capra label. The Festival La Capra takes place at Fairview and marks the arrival of Spring in the wine lands. La Capra wines flow while fantastic food and fabulous friends are celebrated to the beat of uplifting music. The winery’s home vineyard in South Africa’s Stellenbosch region has an ideal climate for growing Merlot grapes, and the 2008 growing season produced fruit of exceptional quality. After 12 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, the wine was ready to bottle and release — and for all of us to enjoy with friends. It has exotic aromatics, with a fresh cherries and currants. There is sweet fruit (plum, red & black cherries) on the palate, with softer tannins and gentle oak influence. This wine is ready now and will continue to develop in the bottle for another year or two. It is very suitable to spicy foods, in particular curries – both Indian and Thai.

Bergevin Lane Vineyards – Walla Walla, Washington
2009 Linen Chardonnay Wahluke Slope
In the beginning months of 2001, Annette Bergevin and Amber Lane co-founded and created Bergevin Lane Vineyards with Gary Bergevin (Annette’s father). The goal for Amber and Annette was to “leave the rat race behind” in California and get back to what they each wanted from life. Annette wanted to be close to her family and long-time friends, and Amber wanted to take on new challenges and continue her personal path of growth and education. Gary’s 20 years of experience in the wine industry in both the vineyard and business aspects, was the catalyst to start the winery. Together they brainstormed, worked hard, and brought to fruition Bergevin Lane. Linen Chardonnay is a new addition to their line and has come just in time for spring. It is a natural beauty, with a natural purity and freshness that is simply delicious. This elegant white wine has bright fruit notes of ripe pear and citrus blossoms on the nose. On the palette there are succulent flavors of golden apple, apricot, pineapple and honeydew. With a hint of honey on the finish, the crisp and clean wine delivers with a truly unique union of fruit and acidity. This is an invigorating wine that is wonderful on its own or alongside a wide range of foods. Pair with cheeses, hors d’oeuvres, white meats in cream sauce, and broiled white fish.

Pacific Wine – Woodinville, Washington
2009 Eye of the Needle Syrah Columbia Valley
Eye of the Needle Columbia Valley Syrah is not your typical over extracted fruit bomb. This is a deliberately lighter-bodied Syrah, emphasizing the riotous flavors this grape offers without resorting to the sort of 30-weight density that many Syrah producers shoot for, in hopes of a big scores. It’s hard, with our current mania for Power Syrahs to remember that Syrah makes a dazzling rose wine and has traditionally been, in its French origins, a more medium-bodied wine that can be paired with a far greater variety of foods than you think, given its current, universal appeal as a steak and lamb wine. This Syrah is actually a blend of 80% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Counoise all from Columbia Valley. It is crammed with blackberry, currant, smoke, vanilla, plum, fig, caramel, and black raspberry flavors – all spoken rather than screamed, as in the Power Syrahs. The texture is smooth and there are zero hard edges and it finishes very persistent. This is a Washington Syrah that loves food. Pair with grilled meats, roasts, pasta with red sauces or hearty cheeses. Perfect now through 2014.

Waving Tree Vineyards – Goldendale, Washington
2006 Grenache Columbia Valley
Waving Tree Vineyards and Winery is a small family owned and operated vineyard and winery, featuring mostly estate wines grown on the bank of the Columbia River just below the Stonehenge Monument. The winery is operated by Goldendale native farmer turned winemaker Terrence Atkins. In the early 2000′s Terrence and his family began experimenting with grape vines and found out through trial and error that non-traditional Washington grapes (specifically Italian varietals) grew extremely well in the area. With that knowledge, they planted Nebbiolo, Barbera, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Grenache. Terrence’s daughter Kimiko now manages the vineyards while Terrence continues on making the wines. Waving Tree’s 2006 Grenache is sourced from 100% estate fruit. Aromas of blackberry, cocoa, cedar and marinated pepper, follow through on a bright, lively entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium bodied with tangy citrus and spice notes. It then finishes with a crisp berry, plum and pepper fade. Drink now through 2013. Serve at room temperature with burgers, grilled bratwursts, sausages, and ham.

Bixler Vineyards – Lodi, California
2009 Union Island Pinot Grigio

The 2009 Union Island Pinot Grigio is the 3rd vintage producing their benchmark white under the careful eye of winemaker Heather Pyle. The 2009 Pinot Grigio is made from 89% Pinot Grigio, 6% Viognier, and 5% Chardonnay all from the Augusta Bixler Farms estate. The wine shows crisp citrus notes, light-to-medium body, with ripe fruit flavors of grapefruit and a hint of pineapple. In order to allow the crisp fruit flavors to be fully expressed, no oak was used during the aging of this wine. This Pinot Grigio was created to be very refreshing as well as approachable. It will make a terrific compliment to shellfish, ceviche’ and lighter appetizers, and is a great warm weather sipping wine by the pool or on the patio. Drink now through 2013.

INTERNATIONAL
Tuga – Portugal
2009 Tuga Vinhos Do Douro DOC
Douro is a Portuguese wine region centered around the Douro River in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region. It is sometimes referred to as the Alto Douro (upper Douro), as it is located some distance upstream from Porto, sheltered by mountain ranges from coastal influence. The region has Portugal’s highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). While the region is associated primarily with Port wine production, the Douro produces just as much table wine (non-fortified wines) as it does fortified wine. The non-fortified wines are typically referred to as “Douro wines”. The 2009 Tuga is made from the traditional indigenous grapes of the Douro Valley: Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Touriga Nacional, this is a medium bodied ruby colored wine, with young, brambly, fruity aromas. Soft and round in the mouth, with a small touch of creamy vanilla from the brief passage through barrels. Very persistant and elegant easy drinking. Pair with poultry or grilled lighter red meats.

Poggio Alle Sughere – Italy
2007 Sangiovese Toscana
Thirty years ago ‘Lionello Marchesi’, a successful industrialist decided to devote himself to his great passion, wine-growing. So began a fascinating story that culminated in the acquisition of three very important estates in Tuscany. The purchase and restoration of an historic monastery at Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the heart of the Siena Chianti Classico area, saw the creation of a prestigious agricultural and residential complex, the present-day Castello di Monastero. Montalcino, the homeland of one of the most famous wines in the world, saw the acquisition and renovation of the Coldisole Estate. Joined by the foundation of Poggio alle Sughere in the Tuscan Maremma area. Lionello’s philosophy, concentrates on the territory and grapes: the wines must be an expression of these two components and highlight their best aspects through attentive management of the vineyards, harvest, vinification and ageing. This wine is 100% Sangiovese. Soft aromas of raspberries and strawberries. Medium-bodied wine with hints of sweet raspberries at the front and middle of your palate followed by darker fruits of plums. A good, balanced wine. Should be paired with spaghetti (not overly sauced), ham or barbecue.

Domaine Familongue – France
2008 L’Envol de Familongue Blanc
Familongue winery is located 30 km west from Montpellier, producing mainly AOC wines. At the beginning of this project, they owned only 4 hectares but now Familongue vineyards cover 25 hectares and is situated in the north and south of their village on specific geological soils. Their vines are located in the north and south of the village “Saint André de Sangonis” on well drained soil where their grapes are emerged with the smell of “garrigue” and are ripened under the Languedoc sun. As self-made wine growers, they learned wine-making skills from experienced wine growers and oenologists concentrating on long moments of tasting and direct observation. Domaine Familongue focuss on the quality , care for the grapes and on good environmental management of the vineyard. They are also very close to nature conservation. Keeping and rearing birds is their second strong passion. That is why their birds are the emblem of their winery and are printed on our wine labels. The 2008 L’Envol de Familongue Blanc is a dry White wine made from 65% Grenache , 20% Clairette, 10 % Roussane, and 5% Viognier. This wine is very fresh and delicate with an attractive pale gold color and green hints. The nose is intense with citrus aromas and subtle peppery, ginger notes. The taste has a supple mouth-feel with fresher acidity and lovely burst of jasmine on the finish. Excellent with fish and a perfect deck wine. Drink now through 2013.
